WS1: Numerical and physical convergence
Continually increasing computing power has led to the development of new sophisticated numerical models and detailed experimental measurement techniques, making it possible for the first time to examine new generations of wave and tidal technology using a robust combined physical and numerical modelling approach.
Modelling tools are required, both at the device and geographic scale, to allow detailed investigation of the design and positioning of single devices and arrays of devices. This work stream will combine new software techniques and experimental hardware and methods to improve convergence between the output of numerical models and measurements made using physical models to quantify and increase confidence in performance predictions of new concepts and designs and how they may be expected to behave in deployment. In addition to being of benefit to the wider community, the modelling tools will be closely integrated with and used by the other work streams throughout Phase 2.
